I’ve had no new work to show for a while as I’ve been researching and planning for my show at Aberystwyth University next March. I chose the later work of John Maltby to respond to, and there is so much there to respond to ! His work has a beautiful contained simplicity to it, it’s quiet, deep, ancient and modern at the same time. I so admire it, it doesn’t just speak it sings. So to start my project I’ve spent time looking at his work, and the work of the artists that inspired him, including Picasso, Henry Moore, Paul Klee, Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallace. I’ve been scribbling myself notes, trying to pin down what it is that so draws me to this work, and to how I can move my own work forward by its influence. It’s not about copying, but about using aspects of it to inspire and change my work.
